G-Power-tuned BMW Z4 Roadster
May 30, 1999
The recently-released 2010 BMW Z4 Roadster hasn’t even warmed up to dealerships, but tuner G-Power has already come up with newly-developed modifications for the car and should add it to an impressive line of modded BMWs–some of which already have top-speed records.
The first of the G-Power Z4 Roadster mods is the ‘Bi-Tronik’ ECU upgrade that can be applied to the range-topper, the sDrive35i model. With the ECU tweaks, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine now goes up to 345 horsepower from 306 horsepower, and from 295 lb.-ft. of torque to 354 lb.-ft. of torque. The upgrade also includes a Deeptone stainless steel muffler for an enhanced sound.
A set of 20-inch alloy wheels also come with the mod, as does a coil-over suspension kit that is fully-adjustable and offers nine different settings. All these mods bumps 0-100kph speed of the Z4 to a mere 4.7 seconds.
The standard Z4 Roadster is still making its way to dealerships and showrooms, and by the time the dust settles, expect at least another mod package from G-Power.
Listening to Soccer Games While Driving Deemed Major Safety Risk
May 30, 1999
While we’re all aware of the rule “don’t text and drive” or any other similar road safety risks involved in driving while using a mobile phone, scientists have found that listening to commentary on football (what Yanks call “soccer”) games while on the wheel is just as distracting and dangerous.
The report, titled “Football Focus”, was made at the University of Leicester, a research-led university in Leicester, England. The report states that some 2 million drivers have already had a brush with accidents while listening to commentary of football games and other sports. The commentary apparently leads to erratic behavior on the part of the driver. The report was made for esure insurance.
Michael Pont, a professor at the University of Leicester, spoke about the risk. “It is widely accepted that the distraction of talking on a hand-held mobile phone may lead to accidents, but other activities may have a similar impact – such as listening to sport on the radio,” said Pont.
Incidentally, the study tested both football fans and non-football fans. Non-football fans behaved more consistently compared to football fans when listening to games, especially at climactic moments.
FAB Brings New Meaning to Desire with Custom SLR
May 30, 1999
FAB Design, a Swiss tuner specializing in Mercedes Benz sports cars, has come up with the SLR Desire—a limited-run 750-horsepower machine with stunning body work and extensive performance upgrades.
With some modifications to the standard SLR McLaren’s engine, the Desire has goes over a hundred horsepower better than the base unit. This, along with the extensive aerodynamic improvements on the carbon fiber body, allow the Desire to reach a regulated top speed of 192mph. Additionally, the car has a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds.
The Desire’s side skirts have recesses for the six exhaust pipes of the car’s custom high-performance sports exhaust system. There’s also a big diffuser at the back’s redesigned panels and a wide rear spoiler. FAB Designs say the additions were made for improved driving dynamics.
Only 15 FAB Design SLR Desire units will comprise the entire production run, which means the exclusivity alone should make it a sought-after commodity by people with a whole shitload of money.

New York 2009: Clean Diesel E250 Concept Unveiled by Mercedes
May 30, 1999
As part of the Mercedes Benz initiative to make the North American market turn to clean diesel solutions, the automaker has unveiled its new E250 Bluetec concept at the New York Motor Show.
The new Mercedes E250 Bluetec concept runs on a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine capable of 201bhp. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency figures are at 33.6 mpg in city traffic and 46.8 mpg in highway traffic. With these figures, the car is already well within the new Bin 5 and EU6 emission laws set to be implemented by 2014.
For a more eco-friendly exhaust, the E250 Bluetec concept makes use of a specialized urea solution within the exhaust system, which greatly reduces the car’s nitrogen oxide emissions. With the urea tank’s 25-liter capacity, owners are guaranteed minimal maintenance and refilling.
The E250 Bluetec is still in the concept stages, but Mercedes Benz should be able to finish development soon, given that the new E350 Bluetec will hit European dealerships in autumn. The technology is already out there, so it shouldn’t take too much time for the production E250.

Kia Unveils VG Executive Saloon Concept
May 30, 1999
Ahead of the Seoul motor show, Kia unveils their new VG luxury saloon concept. The car will most likely be on sale in Korea by autumn this year and in the US by next year.
Powering the car are choices of a four-cylinder 2.4L engine and a more powerful 3.8L V6. The car is a front-wheel drive executive saloon which will share technologies as the Hyundai Azera. The VG will be slotted in a class above the current Kia Magentis.
As a sign of marketing common sense, Kia said that it is unlikely that the VG will be sold in the UK due to expected weak demand for the car. Instead, they will be focusing more on the Magentis which was designed by ex-Audi’s Peter Schreyer.
