Lamborghini Schedules Two-week Production Stoppage

January 17, 2009

If you all thought Lamborghini had it easy during this economic crisis, think again. The Italian sports-car manufacturer is showing signs of being affected by the crunch, with a two-week production stoppage scheduled between February and March.

Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated that the car manufacturer “cannot maintain the previous levels of production during the downturn.” The union-approved stoppage is said to impact some 30 percent of its workforce. Winkelmann added that the stoppage is “a flexible reaction to market volatilities and helps to ensure production jobs in the long term.”

While production cuts are inevitable, Winkelmann iterated that the company is still on track when it comes to its plans. He said Lamborghini “will not abandon its long-term strategy and is not making any reductions in its investment and growth plans. We are committed to introducing one new product to the market each year.”

Lamborghini says that the research and development, expansion, and investment fronts likely will not be getting any delays. Hopefully, this will be the only work stoppage necessary for the company to buck the flagging economy.

Mazda Introduces AdBlue System to the CX-7

January 17, 2009

Mazda will be utilizing the emission-reducing AdBlue system for the facelifted Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, making the company the first Japanese car manufacturer to use the system.

AdBlue is the trademarked “selective catalytic reduction” (SCR) system, which utilizes high-purity urea to significantly reduce the harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. AdBlue is owned by the VDA, or German Association of the Automobile Industry.

The AdBlue system will be available for the CX-7’s 2.2-liter 4-cylinder diesel, sometime in late 2009. While this will be a first for a Japanese car, the system has been in use for a couple of years as part of the Daimler BlueTec technology, used in Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Audi and Volkswagen also signed deals to be able to use BlueTec for the US market.

The SCR is widely used in Europe, Australia, and some Asian nations such as Japan, Korea, and Singapore, thanks to emissions regulations that necessitate the system’s use. The US will also see wide SCR use because of new EPA emissions rules that take effect after 2010. This is why automakers are starting to catch up by making SCR available for their vehicles.

Volkswagen Launches Tiguan R Line

January 16, 2009

Volkswagen has launched a new beefed-up range for its Tiguan compact SUV. The Tiguan R Line variant was designed and built by Volkswagen Individual and is based off the Tiguan’s Sport trim and features a new body kit along with added features.

The enhanced body kit sports a new body-colored front splitter underneath the front bumper. There’re also some new blistered wheel arches on top of the R Line’s own 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. The new rear bumper also has a diffuser and a spoiler. A new flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel is accompanied by two-zone climate control and contoured sports seats emblazoned with the R Line logo.

Buyers can choose from a couple of 2.0-liter TDI diesels (138bhp and 168bhp) and a 2.0-liter 197bhp TSI engine for the R Line’s powertrain.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan R Line is set to start sales in June, adding to an already diverse range offered for the Tiguan compact SUV. There’s no boost in power for this variant, but if you’re after the body kit and the extra features, the R Line should be worth a look.delta farce dvdrip

Citroën Announces Plans for Hybrid DS5

January 16, 2009

A month or so after Citroën announced its plans of reviving the iconic DS nameplate in 2010, the French car manufacturer said that it is going to come up with a hybrid variant for one of the models in the resurrected vehicle line.

Citroën announced last February that its revived DS line will feature three models, the DS3, DS4, and DS5. The recent announcement names the DS5 as the recipient of a possible diesel hybrid powertrain. This could be the same hybrid tech featured in the Citroën C4 WRC HYbrid 4 Concept, exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show.

The company stressed their focus for the future in their statement. The company said, “Hybrid technology takes centre stage for us now in anticipation of the development of a hybrid diesel powertrain, which will be available in the DS5 from 2011.”

It’s a update from the past with a little dash of modern technology. With the DS line being set above the company’s C line, Citroën is looking at several options that could enhance and boost the sales of its revived sub-brand. Who knows, maybe the company might even give all models hybrid alternatives.

Lexus Expands F Sport Performance Accessory Line

January 16, 2009

In Spring of 2008, Lexus launched the F Sport Performance accessory line for its entry-level luxury sports sedans, the IS 350 and IS 250. Now, Toyota’s luxury car brand is expanding the line with accessories for the GS luxury sport sedan, IS AWD, and IS Convertible Coupe.

The expansion covers performance accessories such as alloy wheels and upgrades on intake, brake and suspension systems. Each performance part is made with premium-quality materials, branded with the F Sport badge, and engineered by Toyota Racing Development for Lexus USA.

“F-Sport Accessories offer Lexus owners the ability to customize their vehicles to the next level of performance,” said Lexus national manager of marketing and lifecycle strategy Brian Bolain. “Following last year’s successful launch of accessories for the IS 250 and 350 sport sedans, it was natural to expand the F-Sport accessories lineup to other Lexus performance models.”

Additionally, F Sport accessories come with either a 12-month warranty, or the duration of the new-car warranty if that’s greater. So, for those who want to spice up their Lexus, this is a great and exclusive way to do it.

2010 Mazda CX-7 Unveiled at Canadian Auto Show

January 16, 2009

The facelifted 2010 edition of the Mazda CX-7 mid-size crossover debuted at Toronto’s Canadian Auto Show, which has been reduced to an afterthought because most eyes are on the Chicago Auto Show.

Under the hood of the 2010 CX-7 lies the MZR 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine, capable of 161 horsepower with 161 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm. The Mazda6 uses the same engine. The powertrain is mated to a five-speed automatic with a front-wheel drive setup. There is an option to get an MZR 2.3-liter DSI turbocharged engine, which produces 244 horsepower with 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm.

There’s a new multifunction information display in the central console, along with new designs for the gauges. The driver’s seat features three-position memory while the passenger’s seat is equipped with a power-adjustable recliner. There’s a new blind spot monitoring system, larger grille, and newly-designed front and rear. The interior also has more premium materials used for total comfort and style.

The 2010 Mazda CX-7 should roll out to dealerships sometime in mid-2009. Other details should be announced as its official release draws closer.
