Former McLaren Designer to Work on EV

March 25, 2009

mclaren-designer-ev-1.jpgThe green revolution has definitely shifted many a car engineer’s perspective on what to make and tune these days. If, previously, they’re all about slapping on turbos and superchargers to internal combustion engines, now, they’re concentration on batteries, charging, and tweaking electric motors.

As for car designers, oh they’re still fussing about how to make stylish cars even if they’re designing for green cars. Former McLaren stylist Jim Dowle, now founder of design firm JJAD, announced his plans of designing an all-new sporty EV with gull-wing doors.

Dubbed as the P1-E (P1 previously) is set to be a zero-emissions, fully-electric EV that would not only pick fights with known sporty EVs like the Tesla Roadster and the Lighting GT, they say that performance figures on this one can put most normal supercars to shame.

Weighing only 2,320 lbs including the batteries, the EV will be able to reach naught to sixty in just 2.9 seconds and can reach 230 miles without charging. The best of all is the price tag of just $75,000 which is much less than what the Tesla Roadster now costs.

The Green GT Electric Le Mans Race Car

March 19, 2009

A concept model of the Green GT electric race car has just been unveiled at Energissima—the Swiss Show of Renewable Energy—and is scheduled to compete at Le Mans in 2011.

The car, designed by Thomas Clavet of France, uses a couple of 100kW water-cooled electric motors to push it to an estimated 350-400 brake horsepower. The car also has a whopping 1,475 lb.-ft. of torque up to 100mph. With the car weighing 860 kilograms, the top speed of the car is pegged at 171 mph with a 0-62 time just short of 4 seconds.

The motors draw power from lithium-ion batteries. Some of the car’s subsystems are powered by solar panels—which probably means night racing should be avoided. Green GT has yet to reveal more details about the car’s batteries.

A fleet of the all-electric car will also be tested by the Swiss-based group after extensive testing of the prototype. Green GT hopes to make 22 road-going units in 3 years. Right now, though, the company is focused on producing 2 units that will compete in Le Mans by 2011.download stop or my mom will shoot divx

The Z10 ED: BMW’s Green Supercar

March 16, 2009

Introducing the latest design to lay claim to the title of “Green Supercar”—the BMW Z10 ED. Even though the car is currently in its concept stages, but indications are that it will be a production reality, one that will be eco-friendly and still provide high performance BMW-style.

Already pegged to receive the active aerodynamics and stop-start technology of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics program, the Z10 ED is also being given other technologies. One such technology it could eventually feature is a heat collector that uses the exhaust gas’ waste energy and converts it to electricity—the ‘thermoelectric generator’ that BMW could be able to produce within 5 years.

Design director Adrian van Hooydonk has high hopes for the design. “The Z10 is the answer to the very interesting question ‘what if we designed a car for the future?’ The key to the BMW brand is that we must deliver an exciting dynamic experience in the future. That is the cornerstone of BMW, definitely.”

Of course, van Hooydonk also realizes that making the green supercar isn’t the top priority on BMW’s list, especially given the current economic conditions. Still, it’d be nice to see the Z10 ED production model see the light of day.

Danica Patrick in the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

March 11, 2009

Danica Patrick Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2009 primeval dvd download A lot of motorsport critics have been giving Danica Patrick a hard time. Still can’t believe at this day and age that some guys can’t take the sight of a female racing driver, or even just admit that some women can drive (and drive better than the lot, I must add). But come on! If that female racing driver’s Danica, you’ve got to gosh darned crazy not to look at her.

Danica dropped her IndyCar racing suit for a swimsuit in this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue reprising her appearance from last year, which, coincidentally came just before her win in the 2008 Indy Japan 300.

For those of you geek gearheads who can care less about Danica, you can ogle at the Shelby Cobra replica she’s posing with. But that’s just lame.

Tesla’s 500th Roadster Delivered

March 7, 2009

It seems like the good times keep rolling over at Tesla Motors, with news that the company has delivered the 500th unit of its highly-popular electric Tesla Roadster.

The recipient of the 500th Roadster is Martin Tuchmann, a former auto engineer and current philanthropist in New Jersey. Tuchmann expressed delight at the Roadster, saying that the car “drives like a dream.” Tuchmann is no stranger to electric-powered transportation, as he had converted his boat to electric power so that he could legally use it on Lake Carnegie.

The news follows developments where Daimler AG acquired a 10-percent equity stake in Tesla that should help bolster the company’s tech as well as speed up development of electric vehicles considerably. The partnership will likely focus on the development of a Smart ForTwo fleet as the model is slated to start sales in late 2010, as well as a Smart EV roadster.

The volume at which Tesla sells its Roadster is pretty good, especially since other high-performance EV sales aren’t doing very well. Tesla sales should ramp up further once the Model S sedan and the next-gen Roadster hits the market.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage to Debut in Geneva 2009

March 4, 2009

Aston’s quite busy updating their lineup. While the DBS has been their flagship for the past couple of years, there’s no shortage of people wanting their other offerings like the Vantage, and soon to come, the four-door Rapide. The One-77’s even sold out prior to production.

This V12 Vantage came out as a concept last year and Aston Martin will be debuting the production version of the car this March in Geneva.

The V12 is a 6.0L 510 bhp monster which helps the Vantage get from 0-62 mph in just 4.2 seconds and reach a blistering 190 mph. That’s 90 bhp more than the V8 version of the Vantage and is quicker by 0.5 seconds from 0-62.

Minor cosmetic tweaks for the V12 Vantage are larger air intakes, side skirts, new alloys and a ventilated hood. At the rear, it’s got new dual exhaust with tuned tips and a larger rear spoiler.
