Obama Cuts Hydrogen Car Funding
May 11, 2009
United States President Barack Obama has scrapped the funding for the $1.2 billion program to develop hydrogen fuel-cell cars, a program started by previous president George W. Bush.
The rationale for the move is that the White House is keen to focus on viable solutions when it comes to improving efficiency on the national level. Where the development of hydrogen cars is concerned, it’s just too complicated. The infrastructure for the cars will have to be put in place, which means there would have to be new fueling stations and pipelines built to accommodate the new cars.
With this in mind, the Energy Department deemed that having hydrogen cars for mass consumption within the next two decades just isn’t realistic. Not that electric cars don’t have infrastructure issues—perhaps it’s just that developing hydrogen cars seem to be on a whole different level.
While there will still be research on stationary hydrogen fuel cells, Obama wishes to concentrate on immediate technology for electric cars and hybrids. The move also spares the people from paying around $100 million annually for hydrogen car development.around the world in 80 days download fingerprints divx download twister divx download
Ford Transit Connect, Electric Version in 2010
May 11, 2009
Ford will be coming up with an electric version of its Transit Connect compact van for 2010, collaborating with Smith Electric Vehicles of Britain for the company’s first vehicle in its attempt to go electric.
This marks the start of a series of electric vehicles for Ford. After the Transit Connect, there will be a battery-powered car slated for 2011; then, a plug-in hybrid will be released in 2012. The electric Transit should house an electric motor that has a battery that can go for 100 miles on a full charge.
Smith Electric Vehicles currently has a model called the Smith Ampere, an electric version of the Ford Transit Connect. Ford’s electric version of the Transit Connect will be based off the Ampere, in turn.
It’s great to see the big guns stepping up to the plate and going the electric route. Ford is showing its willingness to make cars that are needed, rather than simply focusing on which cars would sell or not. But then, I don’t think many expected the company’s first electric vehicle would be someone not really known by the people.

The package starts at $3,300 up to a max of $9,400 for the style part. The innovation packages start at $2,300, with the range-topper at $3,800. Only the teaser image of the door sill silhouette is available for now, but new photos and details should be available soon.
Mitsubishi Colt to Get TWR Treatment
May 10, 2009
Mitsubishi has tied up with extreme tuner Tom Walkinshaw Racing and is expected to release a Mitsubishi Colt with TWR’s performance tweaks. The Japanese automaker has recently sent a Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart variant to the tuner to let them see what they can do.
“We’ve sent Tom Walkinshaw Racing a Colt Ralliart and told them to see what they can do with it to improve its performance and handling,” said a Mitsubishi spokesperson. The Mitsubishi Colt Walkinshaw Performance car is likely to receive suspension modifications in order to achieve a lower ride height for improved handling. The tuner will also probably include a new body kit for improved aerodynamics and race styling. TWR is said to be retaining the existing engine in the Colt Ralliart, a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine capable of 147 brake horsepower.
Walkinshaw Performance is the tuner arm of Tom Walkinshaw Racing, a team founded by tourer racer Tom Walkinshaw back in 1976.
With all the modifications, expect the optional Walkinshaw Performance kit to add a significant cost when the standard model is released sometime in Spring 2009.

Saturn-to-Penske Deal Confirmed to be in the Work
May 9, 2009
Both General Motors and Penske Automotive have officially confirmed that a deal is in the works to sell GM’s Saturn brand to Penske.
Once the deals falls through, something that should happen within the third quarter of 2009, Penske is expected to acquire the rights to the Saturn brand as well as Saturn’s assets. Right now, the parties involved are under a 60-day due diligence period as there is still some work to do to make sure that the deal’s terms meet requirements in GM’s current bankruptcy protection.
Details about Penske’s plans for Saturn haven’t been revealed yet. However, the second-largerst automotive dealer group in the US is said to be in talks with manufacturers on how to broaden the Saturn product range. Penske is also expected to retain Jill Lajdziak, the current Saturn general manager, as well as give a post to Tom LaSorda, the Chrysler co-president that is set to retire.
The deal is essential for GM’s viability plans and towards preserving the Saturn brand. More importantly, the deal will allow 350 dealerships to continue their operations and 13,000 people to retain their jobs on top of saving the Saturn brand.watch rated x in divx baker the dvd download two for the road dvdripundead dvd download
BMW Developing ‘Emergency Stop Assistant’
May 9, 2009
BMW is currently developing a new system called “Emergency Stop Assistant” that will guide the car to stop by the side of the road when the driver encounters a health-related emergency.
How does Emergency Stop Assistant work? First, the system detects if the driver suffers a serious health problem. Once it identifies the situation, the system will engage an autonomous driving mode that will then make an emergency stop while also taking into account the surrounding traffic situation. The system also sends out an emergency call for assistance.
The system is still in the prototype stage, but BMW is confident that it can prevent drivers from losing control of their vehicles when they suffer some form of health problem while behind the wheel. The system is being developed for highway conditions for now, so that the potential scenarios will be limited to an extent.
The system will be relying on new technology such as monitoring sensors along with current BMW safety measures, including blind-spot warning and lane departure systems. There is no release date for the system yet.
