Kia Ray Concept to Be Unveiled at Chicago Show

February 11, 2010

Kia Ray Concept

Watch out folks. A new era of cars sporting new dynamic designs are here. We’ve already had out first taste of these with the Mazda concepts sporting the Nagare design language. But is the market ready for such designs? We all thought Honda will be keeping the styling of the Honda CR-Z but they ended up toning it down in the production version.

Here’s Kia with the Kia Ray concept car. It’s a plug-in hybrid with a futuristic look. The concept showcases what Kia thinks of what a future family four-door will look like.

The car sits on a Kia Forte platform and is powered by a 151 bhp direct-injection 1.4L gasoline engine and a plug-in hybrid system that Kia claims to go 50 miles on purely electric power alone.

The car tries to be green too. Body panels are recycled and solar panels are embedded in the hexagonal solar panels.

Kia Planning Toyota FT-86 Rival

December 13, 2009

Kia Kee Concept

Much as I recognize the improvement of Korean cars over the past few years, I’d still pick all Japanese marquees over any Korean badge.

Remember Kia’s Kee coupe concept from 2008? Latest word about it is that it might be reconfigured to take on the Toyota FT-86. The Kee can be possibly turned into a compact RWD sports car in order to position Kia to take on Toyota in some markets.

To be fair, Kia’s parent comapny, Hyundai, has quite the experience in making decent sporty coupes. Remember the Tiburon/Coupe/Tuscany? And how about the Genesis Coupe? That should give Kia a bit of ammo to take on a big name like Toyota.

And hasn’t that accelerator pedal muck up by Toyota affected their credibility? But a car co-developed by Toyota and Subaru versus Kia? Toyota has the cheap sports coupe down to a muscle memory. Kia should remember the car that the FT-86 is resurrecting is one hell of a drifting legend.

That should be make this a no contest.

Korean Automakers Get the Better of Detroit Three

June 28, 2009

Kia SorentoThe US auto industry needs all the help it can get. With GM bankrupt, Chrysler taken over by the Italians, and Ford still reporting sales drop, the industry needs every help it can get. The government poured in billions to help keep the industry alive through the TARP and the cash-for-clunkers program is set to roll out soon.

However, while the Big Three struggle to get back on track, their shares of the market are slowly being eaten away by smaller and more agile automakers – primarily those from Korea like Hyundai and Kia. Both brands are owned by Hyundai which now hold 7.3% of the US market. That figure places them neck-and-neck with Nissan.

Their gains appear to be a replay of what occurred four decades ago, when upstart automakers from Japan started selling cars in the United States. At the time, American carmakers dismissed them, but today they control nearly 40 percent of the American car market.

The cash-for-clunkers program might just help boost car sales, but given the price off the new car, the best buck per bang can be had purchasing small Korean cars. The same possibility has been observed by Top Gear with UK’s cash-for-clunkers program. The government should definitely factor this into their efforts to save the US auto industry.

New York 2009: The New Two-Door Kia Koup

May 12, 2009

Korean car manufacturer Kia has unveiled its first-ever offering for the two-door coupe segment, with the new and aptly-named Kia Koup revealed at the New York Motor Show.

Kia will be giving prospective buyers a choice between a 2.0-liter DOHC engine capable of 156 brake horsepower and a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine that has an output of 173 brake horsepower. The Koup comes with the front-wheel drive platform seen in the Kia Forte compact car.

The Kia Koup will also have high-end trims, including the Koup EX, which sports body-colored bumpers, heated side mirrors with integrated indicators, and 16-inch alloy wheels with premium tires. The top-rung Koup SX features 17-inch alloy wheels with higher-end tires instead of the EX’s 16-inchers.

If you can remember, Kia showcased the Kia KOUP Concept at last year’s New York Motor Show. It seems only fitting that the coupe finally comes from under wraps at the same event a year later. The Kia Koup, as of now, is planned only for a United States release.

Kia Sorento Unveiled at Seoul Show

May 5, 2009

Kia has finally unveiled the new Sorento at the Seoul Motor Show, showing the Korean car manufacturer’s latest offering for the compact crossover SUV segment.

Three engine configurations will be available for the Sorento: a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine that goes for 173 brake horsepower at 166 lb.-ft. of torque, a 2.2-liter diesel engine that pushes 194 brake horsepower with 321 lb.-ft. of torque, and the ‘Mu LPI’ 2.7-liter LPG-powered V6 engine, which goes for 163 brake horsepower at 180 lb.-ft. of torque. The first two engines will likely be the ones available with the Sorento’s UK release later in 2009.

Kia will be using a new six-speed automatic transmission that it claims will be lighter and will provide better fuel-efficiency than regular automatic transmission gearboxes. The new Sorento will also have larger interior room compared to its predecessor. Prospective buyers can also choose between 2WD and 4WD drivetrain configurations.

“The dynamic design of new Sorento adopts simple, linear lines to create a powerful, yet polished appearance,” said Peter Schreyer, Kia’s head designer. “Sporty and striking, the new Sorento represents a new breed of vehicle.”

Geneva 2009: Kia’s New Cee’d ISG and Hybrid Variants

May 3, 2009

At the coming Geneva Motor Show, Kia is set to unveil two new variants of its Cee’d compact car, both of which are focused on providing optimal fuel efficiency for owners. The first one is the Cee’d ISG, or Idle Stop and Go, and the other is the Cee’d Hybrid prototype.

The Cee’d ISG employs a start-stop system that should do well in most low-speed, stop-and-go urban driving situations. The engine shuts down completely when stopping. The system is said to help improve fuel efficiency by 15 percent. The ISG variant is available for the three types of Cee’d body styles, and with an option for 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter engines.

On the other hand, the Cee’d Hybrid uses the same hybrid powertrain system as that of the new Hyundai Sonata, albeit with a lower-powered 15 kW electric motor compared to the Sonata’s 30 kW motor. The Hybrid also features a Continuously Variable Transmission rather than a standard automatic transmission system. Mileage is pegged at 48.9 mpg. The Hybrid also features the ISG technology along with a CVT transmission.

The two Cee’d variants are among 20 Kia units to be exhibited in Geneva.
