Mazda to Tap Toyota for Hybrid Technology

Why reinvent the wheel? Looks like Mazda is carrying that philosophy as far as hybrid technology is concerned. Mazda might not be a global player the likes of Toyota but it has got to be one of Toyota’s competitors in specific markets.
As for hybrid tech, Mazda has yet to compete in the mainstream. Looks like it doesn’t want to go toe to toe with Toyota and its established Prius brand. Instead, Mazda’s considering forging an alliance with Toyota as source for hybrid tech to be slapped on Mazda cars.
Mazda is said to be preparing a hybrid launch by 2013.
There’s a good deal of sense with such a move. Without having to worry developing that aspect of the tech, Mazda can focus on improving other tech bits and styling.
Though it’s a bit weird that Mazda is stepping away from Ford’s hybrid tech. Ford-Mazda ties have been strained as of late but that alliance seems to be secure for now.

Having offered nothing really special in the past motor shows, the Japanese have quite a lot in store for the Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota will be showcasing its revival of the AE86 sports coupe with its Subaru co-developed FT-86. Honda, in its quest to be the greenest automaker, will be showcasing the hybrid-only CR-Z. Mazda will be unveiling a couple of engines and the Mazda Kiyora. Nissan and Mitsubishi will have their debutantes as well.

Mazda to Showcase MX-5 Superlight

Sometimes you have just got to wonder what the heck are automakers doing creating some really radical and amazing concepts and just build one for show. And that’s how Mazda is going to do with the MX-5 Superlight which they will showcasing at the Frankfurt show.
The MX-5 Superlight epitomizes Mazda’s continuing drive for lightweightedness. There’s quite a deal of ecomentality associated with this concept as well since the car’s supposedly built with as few resources as needed.
It was a real effort keeping the car’s weight down to just 2,204 lbs but the effort’s quite worth it as the car promises improved dynamics and fuel efficiency. One really noticeable feature of the car is the missing windshield and driver-side rear mirror. But all that’s part of the effort.
Powering the car’s a MZR 1.8L 4-cylinder engine dishing out 126 hp. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. With the addition of a Mazdaspeed cold-air intake and exhaust system, the engine generates quite a bellow even with its size and power output.
Tokyo 2009: Next-Gen Mazda RX-7 (Rumor)

Rumors are definitely the tasty bits of online information. We just hope that the tastiest ones would not disappoint once more details come out.
According to Best Car, Mazda will be unveiling the next-generation Mazda RX-7 at the Tokyo Motor Show this October. Now that’s something that every road racer and import fan would look forward to. So we all hope this rumor is more fact than fiction.
The new RX-7 will be relieving the RX-8 as the company’s rotary-engine flagship. The rumor has it that Mazda will be drawing from its Nagare design philosophy particularly the Nagare concept. However, even if a concept hits the stands later this year, the car can only come out by 2012.
“This year’s TMS is an opportunity for Mazda to cash in on RX-7 fever as rotary enthusiasts start to wonder what’s going to happen once the RX-8 ends its production cycle,” says Best Car.
If this is true, then this year’s Tokyo Show will be featuring the return of road racer classics with the unveiling of the Toyota-Subaru RWD sports coupe and the RX-7.

Mazda to Add Hybrids and EVs by 2015

A couple of weeks ago, Mazda announced its plans to focus on making efficient diesels rather than bank on the relatively more expensive development of hybrid cars and electric vehicles. Now, the Japanese automaker is going back on its word—at least by 2015.
Takashi Yamanouchi, CEO of Mazda, said that the company will be adding hybrids and EVs to its product line by 2015. He maintains, however, that the automaker’s focus until then will be on improving its gasoline and diesel engines along with extensive weight reduction in order to increase the cars’ fuel efficiency by 30 percent by 2015.
“Our new gasoline engines will achieve the same fuel economy as current diesel engines, and our diesel engines will achieve similar fuel economy as existing hybrids,” said Yamanouchi. This strategy will allow the company to offer “affordable eco-friendly vehicles to 90 percent of the car-buying public, not to just a limited segment of the market.”
Mazda’s efficient gasoline and diesel engine technologies will be on display at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show in late October 2009.

Mazda Introduces AdBlue System to the CX-7

Mazda will be utilizing the emission-reducing AdBlue system for the facelifted Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, making the company the first Japanese car manufacturer to use the system.
AdBlue is the trademarked “selective catalytic reduction” (SCR) system, which utilizes high-purity urea to significantly reduce the harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. AdBlue is owned by the VDA, or German Association of the Automobile Industry.
The AdBlue system will be available for the CX-7’s 2.2-liter 4-cylinder diesel, sometime in late 2009. While this will be a first for a Japanese car, the system has been in use for a couple of years as part of the Daimler BlueTec technology, used in Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Audi and Volkswagen also signed deals to be able to use BlueTec for the US market.
The SCR is widely used in Europe, Australia, and some Asian nations such as Japan, Korea, and Singapore, thanks to emissions regulations that necessitate the system’s use. The US will also see wide SCR use because of new EPA emissions rules that take effect after 2010. This is why automakers are starting to catch up by making SCR available for their vehicles.
