Shanghai 2009: SAIC Unveils Roewe 550RS

One of the more memorable unveilings and perhaps the biggest showstopper from a Chinese automaker at the Shanghai Motor Show was the all-new Roewe 550RS performance-laced mid-range saloon from the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.
With the range-topping model, SAIC previewed a rare performance-enhanced vehicle for China’s own automakers. While there hasn’t been any official word released about the car’s specs, sources from SAIC say that the Roewe 550RS will be getting a 1.8-liter four-cylinder K-series engine. With that setup, the car has 160 brake horsepower at 5000 rpm, with 158 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500 rpm.
Confirmed features include some performance gear, such as a deeper front bumper, wider side sills, a rear spoiler, and 18-inch wheels beneath flared wheel arches.
The new Roewe 550RS was designed at the SAIC in-house designers at the company’s England technical center. The car is set to be released to the Chinese market later in 2009. We’ll see how a homegrown performance trim competes against offerings from the automotive giants.
SAIC MG6 Concept Official Images Released

The Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has released official images of its upcoming MG6 concept car, which will be officially unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month.
The MG6 concept is based off the platform of the Roewe 550, another car released by the SAIC under its Roewe marque. According to sources, the five-door liftback could also likely receive the Roewe 550’s powertrain, including the 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol power plant.
Both the MG and Roewe brands are owned by the SAIC, the fifth-largest automaker in China. While other details of the MG6 concept are yet to be revealed, it is rumored that the car could see release in the Euro market after it makes production. MG was re-launched in Britain when the MG TF LE500 sports coupe was released in 2008. With MG’s tradition in sports car production and motor sport competition, perhaps the MG6 will turn out better than expected.
The Shanghai Motor Show, or 2009 Auto Shanghai, will be held from April 20 through 28 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
