In response to growing urbanization, Scion is looking to expand its line into a new segment. This will take the form of a new “micro-subcompact” model that the Toyota marque will be unveiling at next month’s New York International Auto Show.

Scion is looking to make the new model in line with its youthful image. More importantly, the car could signify a move to dabble in the minicar segment, especially with previous reports that the Toyota iQ could be marketed in North America badged as a Scion.

The new car, which could be named the “tD” given some patent-pending indications, should be showcased as a near-production model. Anyway, there are only a few weeks before the 2009 New York Show kicks off, so we might not have to wait long to get additional details about this new car.

If you can remember, at last year’s New York Show, Scion unveiled a concept called the Hako (pictured). It was purely a design exercise, and the car wasn’t even intended for production. It would be interesting to see if the micro-subcompact will draw from any elements from the boxy concept or if it will be an entirely new experience from a design standpoint.
