Gumpert Apollo Claims Nurburgring Record
August 19, 2009
Second Nurburgring newsbit for today. Instead of test mules though, we’ve got the Gumpert Apollo. Yup, the same car that blitzed the Top Gear power lap and stayed there for quite some time now has claimed the title of fastest lap of production car.
The Gumpert lapped the ‘Ring in 7:11.57 with touring car champion Florian Gruber behind the wheel. Too bad it’s still shy of the road-legal Radical SR8. Still, the Gumpert officially trashes the records previously set by the track monsters like the Dodge Viper SRT-10 and the Nissan GT-R.
The Gumpert packs a 4.2L V8 that dishes out an immense 700 bhp through two turbochargers. That much power propels the car from 0 to 124 mph (200 kph) in just 8.9 seconds.
Aside from the power, lightweightedness also helps maintain a high the power-to-ratio thanks to a steel tubular space-frame chassis and a carbon fiber monocoque. Aero bits (spoilers and a rear wing) help keep the car planted.
