Melkus Re-launch in November with RS2000

January 24, 2009

German sports car manufacturer Melkus has confirmed that its plans for a November re-launch are on track, with the company’s new RS2000 sports car already in the final stages of development and set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The RS2000 puts a focus on light weight and performance, and will have design elements that resemble its predecessor, the RS1000. The sports car will have a 1.8-liter forced induction engine capable of pushing the car to around 150-200 horsepower. The RS2000 will weigh less than 2,200 lbs. The company also has an RS2000 GT model in the works, which could have 300 horsepower.

Melkus was founded in Dresden in 1959, and stopped making cars by 1986. The company was known for single-seat racers and sports cars. The RS1000 was the company’s only road-going car, produced from 1969 to 1979.

While the car still possesses the same designs with the RS1000 for tail lights, wheel arches, and the gullwing doors, the car has been infused with modern technology and features that should make the RS2000 a worthy successor. Only 25 units will be made annually.
