Geneva 2009: Opel Ampera Revealed
January 2, 2009
With only a few days before its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, details of the upcoming Opel Ampera have been revealed, including a fully-rendered image and some design sketches of the aptly-named Chevrolet Volt counterpart.
The 2011 Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid production model features the new Voltec system, the latest version of the E-Flex plug-in hybrid system for use across various General Motors hybrid vehicles and concepts. The Voltec system was previously seen on the Cadillac Converj Concept at the Detroit Show.
The Ampera can go 40 miles on battery power alone, after which the internal combustion engine starts to generate electricity to power the car for the additional distance. However, since it has been found that 80 percent of Europeans drive for less than 30 miles a day, the Ampera’s battery range should be optimal. Charging time is between two to three hours.
The car will be showcased at the auto show this early, and it is set to be paraded at US auto shows later in the year. Of course, as the model year indicates, the Ampera isn’t going to start sales until 2011.
