Pirelli to Collaborate with Magneti Marelli, and Brembo on “Cyber Tire”
January 2, 2009
A new “Cyber Tire” with its own wireless, microchip-based tire monitoring system is in the works, and Pirelli has partnered with Magneti Marelli and Brembo to make this system possible.
The aim is to come up with a system that offers a complete tire-monitoring solution, which would help reduce engineering expenses and be readily integrated into current processes. The all-in-one system is designed to report the tire’s temperature, load, and pressure. The availability of constantly-streaming information will also help other important car components such as electronic stability control and anti-lock braking systems.
The tire giant will rely on Magneti Marelli for the electronic control aspect, and Brembo will co-develop the brakes for the tire. The system will be placed in the tire carcass, and the designers utilized the tire’s motion to power the system. That way, the system can report on the tire’s vital information as long as the tires continue to roll.
While the Cyber Tire is set for a 2011 or 2012 release, a variant made for motorcycles—called the Cyber Tire Lean—is also in the works.
